How Myoelectric Technology Is Transforming Transtibial and Transfemoral Prosthetics

Technology has completely changed the world of prosthetics. One of the most exciting changes in recent years has been the introduction of myoelectric systems. These systems allow users to control their prosthetic limbs using signals from their own muscles. Instead of relying only on mechanical parts, these smart systems help the prosthetic work in sync with the body, making movement smoother, more natural, and more intuitive.

At Robobionics, we’ve seen firsthand how myoelectric technology is helping both below-knee (transtibial) and above-knee (transfemoral) amputees feel more confident and independent. From faster walking to better balance and smarter motion, these advancements are creating real change in how people live with prosthetics. In this article, we’ll explore what myoelectric technology is, how it works for different amputation levels, and what it means for the future of mobility.

What Is Myoelectric Technology?

Myoelectric prosthetics use signals from your muscles to control movement. These signals are picked up by sensors placed inside the prosthetic socket. When you move or think about moving a muscle, the sensors read the signal and send it to a small computer that controls the movement of the prosthetic limb.

How Muscle Signals Power the Prosthesis

Even after amputation, the muscles that once controlled the leg are still active.

Even after amputation, the muscles that once controlled the leg are still active. For example, when someone with a transtibial amputation thinks about flexing their ankle or lifting their toes, the muscles near the residual limb still contract. Myoelectric sensors detect these small changes in muscle activity and use them to trigger movement in the prosthetic.

This means that the user doesn’t have to use their upper body or shift their weight awkwardly to move the prosthetic. Instead, they simply use their natural muscle signals. This makes the movement feel easier, smoother, and more connected to the rest of the body.

Robobionics uses advanced surface sensors that are carefully placed and calibrated based on the user’s muscle strength and limb shape. This helps the prosthetic respond quickly and accurately, improving both comfort and control.

Smarter Than Mechanical Systems

Traditional mechanical prosthetics rely on levers, hinges, and springs. While they can still offer good movement, they don’t respond in real time to the user’s body. Myoelectric systems, however, can adjust their movement speed, resistance, and timing based on how the muscle signals change. This leads to smarter control, especially during complex movements like climbing stairs or walking on uneven ground.

This real-time response is especially helpful for transfemoral users, where both the knee and foot need to move in coordination. Myoelectric control allows for smoother knee bends, better timing, and more support during each step. It reduces the mental and physical effort needed to walk.

Robobionics combines this technology with lightweight materials to create prosthetics that feel both smart and natural. We believe the best technology should feel like an extension of the body—not like a machine.

Personalized for Each User

Myoelectric prosthetics are never one-size-fits-all. Each system is programmed based on the user’s muscle strength, limb length, activity level, and personal goals. During the fitting process, our experts adjust the sensitivity of the sensors, test different movement patterns, and fine-tune the responses.

Some users may need stronger signals to activate movement, while others may require faster response time for more active lifestyles. This level of customization ensures that the prosthetic works with you—not against you.

At Robobionics, we provide trial sessions to help users get familiar with the system. We also offer ongoing support to adjust the setup as your body adapts and your needs change.

Myoelectric Benefits for Transtibial Prosthetic Users

For users with a below-knee amputation, myoelectric systems offer a more natural walking pattern, better control of the foot, and improved stability during everyday movement.

For users with a below-knee amputation, myoelectric systems offer a more natural walking pattern, better control of the foot, and improved stability during everyday movement.

More Natural Foot Control

One of the biggest challenges for transtibial users is controlling how the foot moves. Traditional feet may feel stiff or slow, especially during fast walking or changing directions. With myoelectric control, the foot can respond to muscle signals and move in a more fluid way.

This improves the rolling motion of the foot from heel to toe, making walking feel smoother. It also helps users better handle slopes, stairs, and uneven paths. The foot adjusts automatically based on how you move, reducing the effort needed for each step.

Robobionics offers myoelectric-compatible feet that are designed to support both daily use and active lifestyles. They combine comfort and flexibility for users who want to move naturally without thinking too much about their steps.

Reduced Pressure on the Sound Leg

When a prosthetic foot doesn’t move smoothly, the user often shifts more weight to the other leg. Over time, this can cause pain in the hips, back, and knees. With myoelectric control, the load is more evenly shared because the prosthetic responds better to your body’s motion.

This balance reduces strain on the sound leg and allows the user to walk longer without discomfort. It also helps prevent future joint problems, which is a major benefit for younger users or those who stay on their feet all day.

Robobionics helps users train with their new system to build equal movement on both sides. We believe that good alignment and smart technology lead to healthier, more comfortable walking.

Easier Adaptation and Learning Curve

Transtibial users often find it easier to adapt to myoelectric systems because they retain their natural knee joint. This makes it easier to control the prosthetic foot using familiar muscle patterns. With fewer parts to control and a more intuitive design, users can start walking confidently sooner.

Most users learn how to control the foot in just a few sessions. Over time, their body builds muscle memory, and the movements become second nature. This quick learning curve is a major advantage for those returning to work, school, or daily routines.

Robobionics supports transtibial users with guided rehab, personalized fitting, and easy-to-use feedback tools that help track progress and speed up adaptation.

Myoelectric Advancements for Transfemoral Users

Above-knee amputees face more challenges when it comes to prosthetic control.

Above-knee amputees face more challenges when it comes to prosthetic control. Without a natural knee, movement becomes more complex. But myoelectric technology is closing that gap—making life easier, smoother, and more independent for transfemoral users.

Better Knee Control and Smoother Walking

A major benefit of myoelectric systems for transfemoral users is the improved control of the prosthetic knee. Traditional mechanical knees often stay stiff or move too quickly, depending on how they’re set. Myoelectric knees, however, adjust in real time based on the user’s muscle activity and body movement.

This makes walking smoother and more natural. When you move your hip forward, the knee bends and straightens at just the right speed. This helps with walking rhythm, prevents stumbling, and supports better posture.

At Robobionics, we use smart knee joints with built-in sensors and microprocessors. These systems are customized to respond to your unique movement style, helping you walk confidently indoors, outdoors, and on uneven terrain.

Improved Stability During Stopping and Turning

Staying stable when you stop or turn is especially important for transfemoral users. Because the prosthetic leg lacks a natural joint, sudden movements can feel wobbly. Myoelectric systems help by locking or adjusting the knee automatically based on how your muscles move.

For example, when you stop walking, the knee recognizes the shift in your body weight and adds resistance to keep you stable. When you turn, it supports your motion by adjusting the foot and knee angle. This makes real-world walking—like turning corners or stopping quickly—feel much safer.

Robobionics designs these systems with safety in mind. Our goal is to reduce the mental load of walking and let users focus on living, not controlling every movement.

More Freedom and Confidence in Daily Life

Perhaps the biggest advantage of myoelectric systems is the boost in independence and confidence they provide. With better movement control and less need for conscious effort, users can move freely in their environments. Whether it’s going to work, shopping, or attending a social event, the prosthetic feels more like a part of the body than an add-on.

Transfemoral users who switch to myoelectric systems often say they feel more in control of their life again. They walk longer, move more smoothly, and stop worrying about every step. This emotional impact is just as valuable as the physical one.

Robobionics offers full training and long-term support for transfemoral users exploring myoelectric options. We help them build the strength and skills needed to use the system with ease and confidence.

Fitting, Training, and Adapting to Myoelectric Prosthetics

Getting a myoelectric prosthetic is not just about the technology—it’s also about how well the system fits your body and how well you’re trained to use it.

Getting a myoelectric prosthetic is not just about the technology—it’s also about how well the system fits your body and how well you’re trained to use it. A smart prosthetic needs smart support. At Robobionics, we focus on making sure each user gets a personalized fit, hands-on training, and ongoing help throughout their journey.

Personalized Fitting for Muscle Signals

Myoelectric sensors need to be placed exactly where your muscles send the strongest signals. During the fitting process, our team carefully tests different spots on your residual limb to find the best areas to pick up electrical activity. Once these areas are mapped, the socket is designed to hold the sensors in place with consistent contact.

This level of detail is especially important because muscle signals vary from person to person. Even two users with the same type of amputation will have different patterns of movement. That’s why no two myoelectric prosthetics are built the same. A perfect fit ensures reliable signal reading, smooth movement, and overall comfort.

At Robobionics, we use scanning technology and pressure mapping to build sockets that support both transtibial and transfemoral users. We also make sure the sensors are sealed and protected, so they keep working even with daily wear and moisture.

Learning How to Move with the System

Even though myoelectric prosthetics respond naturally to muscle signals, they still require practice to use properly. During training, you’ll learn how to activate specific muscles to trigger foot or knee movements. This can feel strange at first, especially if you haven’t used those muscles in a long time.

For transtibial users, the training focuses on foot motion and weight shifts. You’ll practice lifting the toe, rolling the foot, and walking at different speeds. For transfemoral users, training includes knee control—learning how to bend, extend, and stabilize the leg using hip and thigh movements.

Therapists work closely with you to break the process into small steps. With time, the movements become automatic, and your body starts to trust the prosthetic. Robobionics also offers gamified rehab exercises and digital tools that make training fun and easy to track.

Adjusting Over Time as Needs Change

As your body gets stronger and your confidence grows, your movement patterns may change

As your body gets stronger and your confidence grows, your movement patterns may change. You might start walking faster, turning more sharply, or using your prosthetic for longer hours. When this happens, your myoelectric system can be adjusted to keep up with your progress.

Our systems are designed to be flexible. We can update the sensitivity of the sensors, reprogram the timing of movement, or fine-tune the response settings—all without replacing the entire prosthetic. This keeps your device working well for years and saves you the cost and hassle of starting over.

At Robobionics, we stay in touch with our users for regular follow-ups and system check-ins. Whether it’s your first month or your third year using a myoelectric prosthetic, we’re here to keep your system aligned with your life.
